Improv

3rd-11th July 2021 – Mischief Movie Night In

“Every show is different with you suggesting a genre, location and title, and Mischief hilariously bring the show to life, complete with rewinds, fast forwards, directors cuts and a thrilling live score to laugh along to. Starring them, directed by you, Mischief Movie Night is a guaranteed comedy blockbuster!”

Location: Riverside Studios, London (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Comment: The Mischief team are the ones behind The Play That Goes Wrong etc, so we were excited to support their Covid-19 live stream venture – a fully interactive improvisation, with suggestions incorporated from social media. It was so much better than we even imagined, with full song and dance routines included, all made up on the spot. We bought tickets to as many of their shows throughout July as we could, and they were all hilarious.

25th July 2024 – Breast Show Ever

The hosts and producers of Comedian Feud bring their game to this benefit show. Your favourite improvisers will play the game then perform scenes based off the mayhem that unfolds! All proceeds go to help Lyndsey Frank battle America’s health care system while having metastatic breast cancer.

Location: Upright Citizens Brigade, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Cast: Isabella Roland, Brennan Lee Mulligan, Becky Drysdale, Heather Anne Campbell, Vic Michaelis, Jacquis Neal, James Mannion
Comment: Our favourite improvisor Vic Michaelis, along with Dropout stars Izzy and Brennan, raising money for a good cause, what’s not to love?

17th August 2024 – Izzy’s Big Family Reunion

“Izzy Roland and her friends and family present a night joy and improv! Izzy’s just made a movie with her family and her “family”, including Claudia Lonow and Jonathan Schmock — and is ready to tell you all about it.  Have some fun with Izzy’s family along with improvisers Brennan Lee Mulligan, Vic Michaelis, Rekha Shankar, Katie Marovitch, Angela Giarratana, Paraloubis and other surprise special guests as they celebrate the announcement and launch of the new film, D(e)ad! You can expect games, long-form improv, and wild family reunion energy.

Location: Dynasty Typewriter, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Cast: Izzy Roland, Brennan Lee Mulligan, Vic Michaelis, Rekha Shankar, Katie Marovitch, Angela Giarratana, Lou Wilson
Comment: We backed Izzy’s Kickstarter for her new film D(e)ad, mostly because it stars Vic Michaelis, but also because we know any project by Izzy and Brennan will be great. This improv show was originally planned to create awareness of the Kickstarter campaign, and to act as a fundraiser during the evening, however the Kickstarter smashed its goal within 4 hours of going live!

21st August 2024 – Likeminds!

“Likeminds! is a trivia game show that takes the fact-filled fun of a pub quiz and combines it with the quick-witted comedy of an improv show. Host JOEY BLAND (Improvised Shakespeare, Jeopardy!) takes two hilarious comedian competitors and faces them off in a head-to-head battle of the wits along with lots of help from the audience! It’s like if Jeopardy & Taskmaster had a really smart baby!

Location: Dynasty Typewriter, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Cast: Rob Corddry, Vic Michaelis, Bourke Floyd, Ashley Ward
Comment: We paid for this live stream mostly for Vic Michaelis content, but also because the description of “Taskmaster meets Jeopardy” sounded right up our street.

25th October 2024 – Vic Michaelis Presents: Voicemail The Musical

Vic Michaelis brings a night of theatre to UCB Franklin culminating in the premier of their new musical, THE VOICEMAIL – pamphlet, music and lyrics by Alden Derck and Gabe Gibbs. Starring a VERY SPECIAL GUEST!!!!! There will be dance! There will be singing! There WILL be stand-up!!!!

Location: Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Cast: Vic Michaelis, Angela Giarratana, Rashawn Scott, Jiavani, Jacquis Neal, Siobhan Thompson, Emily Skeggs, Patrick MacDonald, Jon Matteson, Kimia Behpoornia, Alden Derck, Ruha Taslimi, Nina Concepción, Katie Marovitch, Lyndsey Frank, Shannon Sheridan, Mary Lou, Madison Lanesey
Special Guest: Vic’s sister Sarah
Comment: Once again Vic has been plotting to get their sister Sarah noticed, this time by writing another musical for her to star in (the first one was in Season 1 of Thousandaires on Dropout). That was the finale of the mixed bill show, and there was not enough Vic content as they were the host rather than a performer, but it was all fun anyway! UPDATE: Many months later we found out that this was secretly part of a Gamechanger episode!

15th November 2024 – Mamma Mia But Different

“Have you ever wondered what an ABBA jukebox musical would look like if it wasn’t set in Greece during a wedding? Come see an entirely re-imagined production, with completely different characters, and wildly different plots.”

“A casting office in Burbank in spring 2007. 6 women in overalls and blonde wigs competing for one role: a mother at her daughter’s wedding in Greece, surprised by the arrival of three people who could be her child’s father. A young, upcoming, multi-Oscar winning hopeful named Meryl Streep, who struggled to even get in the door. You might know the story of Mamma Mia!, but there’s no way you know the intricate inner struggles of the actresses who dreamed of being Donna.”

Location: Dynasty Typewriter, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Title: A Donna Line
Cast: Vic Michaelis, Kimia Behpoornia, Angela Giarratana, Gabe Gibbs, Mary Lou Kolbenschlag, Madison Lanesey, Jon Matteson, Emily Skeggs
Comment: We loved this. It was absolute chaos in a good way. Highlight was Vic literally climbing through the audience during their rendition of “Take a Chance on Me”.

15th December 2024 – Mamma Mia But Different

“Have you ever wondered what an ABBA jukebox musical would look like if it wasn’t set in Greece during a wedding? Come see an entirely re-imagined production, with completely different characters, and wildly different plots.”

“The only show dedicated to creating new versions of the hit ABBA jukebox musical, is back for a very special, very shoddy, nativity story as told through the soundtrack of the greatest pop band of all time. We present to you one of the greatest stories of all: the birth of Jesus Christ.”

Location: Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, LA (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead
Title: A Donna Line
Cast: Vic Michaelis, Aiden Derek, Mariah Rose Faith, Angela Giarratana, Gabe Gibbs, Jon Matteson, Madison Lanesey, Patrick McDonald, Emily Skeggs
Comment: This was very different to the previous show. It was a deliberately amateur nativity, with the cast playing characters who don’t know their lines etc. Vic sang the same song for their solo, which made us question whether this was a coincidence or a repeated joke which we’re too new to have picked up on. I guess we’ll find out at the next show…

20th-21st December 2024 – Mischief Movie Night In

“No two shows are the same, as you suggest a genre, location and title, and Mischief hilariously bring the show to life, complete with rewinds, fast forwards, directors cuts and a thrilling live score to laugh along to. Starring them, directed by you, Mischief Movie Night In is a guaranteed comedy blockbuster, and the perfect family treat this Christmas.”

Location: Lilian Baylis Studio, London (Streamed)
With: Wesley Mead (Kelvin & Vickie Burpitt for one show)
Comment: Following a busy summer travelling to London and back multiple times to watch Mischief Movie Night shows, we were excited to see the team back again as soon as Christmas! We bought tickets to go to the live shows in January, and the December shows were being streamed, so we could save on train tickets! We paid for the three shows below (but did watch all eight through other means…)

Title: Hull School Musical
Genre: Musical
Setting: A school in Hull
Cast: Jonathan Sayer as Oscar, Bryony Corrigan, Ellie Morris, Dave Hearn, Henry Shields, Harry Kershaw, Charlie Russell

Title: All I Want for Christmas is Zoo
Genre: Christmas
Setting: A zoo
Cast: Jonathan Sayer as Oscar, Bryony Corrigan, Ellie Morris, Dave Hearn, Henry Shields, Harry Kershaw, Charlie Russell
Highlights: Harry being unfamiliar with the ghosts in a Christmas Carol, thus inventing the character of a new ghost – Christmas Bonanza Boy!

Title: The Codfather
Genre: 50s Gangster movie
Setting: A cruise ship
Cast: Jonathan Sayer as Oscar, Ellie Morris, Dave Hearn, Henry Shields, Henry Lewis, Susan Harrison
Highlights: Henry’s character of the detective asking Ellie’s character what her criminal son does for a living. Her answer – “Criiiii…ime”. Jonathan was furious – “you had all that time to think of a different ending to that word!”

National Theatre Live

11th April 2019 – All About Eve

“Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing and tells Margo and her friends a melancholy life story. Margo takes Eve under her wing, only to have Eve use her and connive against her.”

Location: Noel Coward Theatre, London (Live Streamed at Cineworld Yeovil)
With:
Wesley Mead
Comment:
We had been desperate to see Gillian Anderson perform in person, but weren’t able to get tickets. This live stream on a cinema screen was the next best thing.
